14 October: The World According to Monsanto, film bij Movie-W

Monsanto is the world leader in genetically modified organisms, as well as one of the most controversial corporations in industrial history. This centuryold empire has created some of the most toxic products ever sold, including polychlorinated biphenyls and the herbicide Agent Orange. Based on a painstaking investigation, The World According to Monsanto puts together the pieces of the company’s history, calling on hitherto unpublished documents and numerous first-hand accounts. Today, Monsanto likes to style itself as a “life sciences” company. It claims it wants to solve world hunger while protecting the environment. But the history of Monsanto is filled with disturbing episodes. Behind its clean, green image, Monsanto is tightening its grasp on the world seed market, striving for market supremacy to the detriment of food security and the global environment.

15 October 20:00 uur: Boekpresentatie ‘Tegen beter weten in’ (Book presentation, in Dutch) 20h, bibliotheek Stationsstraat 2, Wageningen.
Dick Hollander (voormalig biologische tuinder en wijnbouwer) introduceert het boek ‘Tegen beter weten in’ over de geschiedenis van de biologische landbouw, en geeft zijn visie op de huidige stand van zaken rondom landbouw en voeding. Joost Visser (onderzoeker) licht in een reactie toe dat elke soort landbouw, welke ook, afhangt van de goede diensten van het ecosysteem en de bodem. Hij vraagt zich af: kunnen we eigenlijk wel anders dan 'biologisch boeren'? Inclusief vertoning van een korte film over een jonge, innovatieve biologische boer in Nederland.

16 October: Political Café- Food4all: Food Sovereignty in practice. With music, snacks and a creative intermezzo.

On World Food Day, thinkers and practitioners share perspectives in a roundtable conversation. How can the world’s growing population feed itself? How are we are bringing agro-ecology and food sovereignty into practice around the world? With a variety of guests including:

Steve Sherwood (lecturer at the WUR and farmer in Ecuador),
Pablo Tittonel (professor in Farm Systems Ecology at WUR)

In Vreemde Streken, 1e Kloostersteeg 3 (tbc). The talented chefs of Vreemde Streken serve you a healthy and delicious locally sourced eco dinner for 10 euro, accompanied by a performance of a singer-songwriter.
At 20:00 uur we will screen the 'gastronomic pleasure' film Calabria to California.
